“It Fills the Gap”: Julie’s Story
Julie, a retired cake decorator living in Pulaski County, knows how to stretch a dollar. Living on a fixed income and managing a disability, she and her family receive just $60 a month in SNAP benefits.
“It doesn’t buy much anymore,” Julie says, “but it helps. It fills the gap.” With that $60, she’s able to stock up on pantry staples—just enough to keep meals on the table when times get tight.

Julie and her family also receive a small monthly benefit through their insurance card. “We do without some things,” she says, “but we’re never hungry.” Thanks to a small garden and her ability to can food, they’ve managed to stay afloat.
But she worries about others. “For some people, SNAP is their only way to make sure their families have food. Cutting those benefits means a lot of elderly people and children will be left out.”
When Julie found the SNAP Help Center through the Arkansas Foodbank, she didn’t realize the Foodbank was behind it. “We found it online—it was pretty easy,” she says. That support made a difference when navigating the system felt overwhelming.
Julie’s story is one of resilience—but also a reminder: SNAP is a lifeline for thousands of Arkansans. And with your support, the Arkansas Foodbank can continue to help families like Julie’s fill the gap.
